Prostatitis
For men under the age of 50, the most common prostate problem is prostatitis, or inflammation of the prostate gland. Often the result of a bacterial infection, the prostate gland becomes inflamed and swollen, causing a burning discomfort during urination. For men over 50, the most common prostate problem is prostate enlargement, or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Because the prostate tends to enlarge with age, it may begin to constrict the urethra as well as exert pressure on the bladder. It is important to note that prostatitis sometimes develops from untreated BPH.
